God’s purpose is for time-space history.
God has purposed that his ‘will’ be done on earth. Through the biblical motif of the ‘Kingdom of God’ we learn that God’s Government is designed to bring human flourishing to all spheres of life, which entails another biblical motif of ‘Creation and New Creation’, promising the renovation of the cosmos—a New Heavens and a New Earth.
How does God fulfil his kingdom and new creation purpose? Every human government has a constitution through which its legislation is enacted. Likewise God’s Government. This constitution is the covenant that God has made with humankind; first with Adam as the representative head of humanity, and then with Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and finally culminating in Christ as the new representative head of humanity. God’s revelation through these covenants is progressive, with each covenant expanding on the ethical requirements for covenant-keeping. The ultimate covenant in Christ climaxes with the regeneration of the human heart, enabling humankind to obey the covenant and its ethical requirements. This will play out in gradual cultural renewal as the Gospel is proclaimed and God pours out his Spirit. Integral to the success of the Gospel and the increase of God’s Government will be a restored Body of Christ, the church.
